People are pretty good at hiding how they're doing, even from themselves. But music choices tend to shift before words do, the tempo slows down, one song plays on repeat, or nothing gets played at all.
That's because music is more of an automatic reaction than a conscious choice. On a bad day you don't really decide what to play, your hand just goes straight to a certain song without thinking about it.
Glancing back at your own listening history once in a while works like a mirror. If it's been a week of the same heavy songs on repeat, that's often saying something your words haven't gotten around to yet.
